Before the story starts, Hinata was a member of the Fisherman Collective on Soukai. Even her mother is also a renowned fisherman outside of war times. When her mother is killed in action in Ryuumon Castle, she took her name and the Fisherman Collective start harassing her and even giving her a low paycheck, prompting her to quit the collective to earn money on her own.
When Akame arrives, she personally takes her in and Akame taught her swordsmanship after losing a duel against Tobari in sparring. Over three days of tutelage by Akame, Hinata manages to defeat Tobari in sparring. Hinata then recommends that Akame participate Elder's Class to learn more about her origin while also enabling her to tutor more from Akame while waiting for the Elder to return.
Days later, Hinata manages to catch double-fold clams to make a feast for Akame, but the Fisherman Collective refuse to give her a big paycheck due to her no longer being a part of the collective. She was stopped by her class when she was about to pick a fight with the Fisherman Collective. In the class, Akame explains the reason she came and Hinowa sympathizes with Akame in regards to the things she's gone through.
When Soukai posted that they recruit new soldiers, Hinata and her class decides to sign up under the recommendation of the Elder. The Fisherman Collective attacks her to test her, but Hinata manages to defeat them single-handedly, much to the collective's surprise. She and her class are later deployed to the battlefield under Maruge Army's command.
On Mt. Kageboshi, Hinata manages to save Fumio, Hinowa's former subordinate while she and Suzumaru are quickly breaking through the Tenrou assault on Maruge's main camp to defend it. Hisame, however, is already on the scene and will protect it by himself so Hinata and the rest of the class went to sweep any attackers surrounding Mt. Kageboshi.
She then encounters Yomihime who decide to takes part on the battlefield by herself. Willing to take revenge on her mother, she begins battling Yomihime but despite the assistance provided from fellow classmates, Yomihime has proven no match for her and Akame manage to arrive in time to save her from death.
Witnessing the duel, she realizes her capacity was not able to defeat Yomihime. After Akame successfully repels Yomihime, she and Tobari lamenting how weak they are. This made her decide that she will become stronger on the next battle and she made a personal request to be trained personally by Akame after the war.
Following the end of the battle at Mt. Kageboshi, Hinata was promoted to the Captain and inheriting her mother's position that was also once a Captain. Most of her mother's former subordinate come to her and offer themselves to join her unit.
After the battle, Hinata and Akame travel around the town, using the reward money to buy some foods. After the information was gathered, the Elder orders them to hunt down Umibouzu after concluding that the class needs a Meihou to increase survival rate after Akame narrowly repel Yomihime. Together, the class sets out to defeat Umibouzu and takes the necessary material to create a Meihou.
Once all the students receive Meihou, Hinata resumes training with Akame until news reaches them that Tenrou plans another invasion. This time, the girls from the class join Hinata's unit while the males are joining Hisame's unit. Under Maruge's command, they set out to Shiranui Fortress.
Upon arriving, Hinata allows Akame to scout the surroundings under Maruge's authorization, due to Akame's experience as an assassin. While Akame is scoping out in the mountains, Hinata witnesses the duel between Kyoukotsu and Buaku first, before Suzumaru duels him.
At night, Akame returns and she got a word that she was commended thanks to her effort to takedown Tenrou ninjas. Following days on Shiranui Fortress, Hinata and her units continue to engage Tenrou Soldiers. At a certain night, when Soil Spider launches the surprise attack on Shiranui Fortress, Hinata leads her units to defeat it. She was scolded slightly by Iroha due to not putting her faith in her own unit. Rallying her unit while sending Akame to stakeout once again to find Tenrou spies, she leads her unit to defeat Soil Spiders.
When Hisame defeats Kyoukotsu and Akame returns, she was relieved to see Akame is alright after seeing the burn injury on her arms, knowing that she has her own battle somewhere. She also conveys Akame's word about her refusal for promotions into both Captain and Ninja to Maruge.
